Major Fighters in UFC 316: Dvalishvili vs O'Malley 2
Merab Dvalishvili
Merab took the bantamweight title against Sean O’Malley back in 2024 after going on an impressive 10-fight win streak. Since then, he’s defended the belt against Umar Nurmagomedov, winning a fight of the night bonus for his impressive performance. The Georgian fighter is now 19-4 in his professional career, with 12 wins in the UFC. Although he lost his first 2 fights in the UFC, he hasn’t lost since and uses his cardio and wrestling as his main weapons.
Sean O’Malley
O’Malley has excellent striking ability and is a fan favorite thanks to his style. Between 2020 and the first fight against Merab, he had 10 fights with 8 wins and 8 performance bonuses. He beat Merab’s teammate, Aljamain Sterling, to win the title, and defended against Marlon Vera as he avenged his only career loss at the time. However, he was then defeated by Merab to bring his career record to 18-2.
Julianna Peña
Peña had the performance of her life when she submitted former women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes to win the belt in 2021. She then lost the rematch, before Nunes retired, vacating the title and leaving the division open. 2 years later, she made her return against Pennington, winning the vacant title in a split decision. She’s now a 2-time UFC world champion. Her current professional record stands at 11-5, with 8 wins and 3 defeats in the UFC.
Kayla Harrison
Two-time PFL champion and 2-time Olympic gold medalist Kayla Harrison has looked unbeatable since her arrival in the UFC in 2024. Although she’s only had 2 fights in the UFC, it’s clear that she’s championship calibre, with a submission win against former champion Holly Holm and a unanimous decision against Ketlen Vieira. Harrison only has one career loss on her record, which stands at 18-1 coming into this matchup.
Fight Card & Betting Odds
Main Event
Merab Dvalishvili vs Sean O'Malley
The first between these two was relatively one-sided, with the wrestling ability of Merab Dvalishvili proving too much for O’Malley to handle. Despite his limited striking, Merab outstruck his opponent by 214 to 49 strikes. It was fair to say that Merab almost every round of their fight, and his performance against Umar was also incredibly impressive. It’s not surprising that he’s the current UFC odds betting favorite.
O’Malley has a chance to win the belt back despite not fighting since. Although he was comprehensively beaten, he did have some success in the last round with a front kick to the body. If he can utilize this early, he might find more success this time, but understandably, he’s a big MMA betting underdog.
Co-Main Event
Julianna Peña vs Kayla Harrison
Peña’s fight against Raquel Pennington was pretty lacklustre, with neither fighter really doing enough to win, and most would agree that she’s fortunate to be a 2-time UFC world champion. However, it’s an indicator of how thin the women’s bantamweight division is. Despite being the champion, Peña is a heavy underdog. Still, that won’t phase her as she was a +700 MMA odds underdog when she beat Nunes.
Harrison was always going to be fast-tracked to the title when she entered the UFC, considering her credentials in the Olympics and the PFL. She’s incredibly strong and has superior wrestling ability. However, despite being a massive favorite, she should be wary of Peña’s submission threat.
