Spain moved past Austria in their first knockout match, winning 3-0 to send them through to the Round of 32. Despite a difficult game, Spain came out on top against Portugal, grabbing a last-minute goal to win the match 1-0. They then faced Belgium in the quarterfinal, where they won 2-1 thanks to another late goal. Spain showed their control once more as they comfortably beat France in the semifinal.

Argentina had a difficult match against Cape Verde in the Round of 16 knockout stage, needing extra time to beat the minnows. They eventually won 3-2, avoiding a penalty shootout thanks to an own goal. Their next match against Egypt was also a nervy one. They didn’t need extra time this time, but had to come back from 2 goals down to win 3-2. They then beat a 10-man Switzerland team 3-1 in extra time to make the semifinal. Against England, they went a goal down in the second half before coming back to win thanks to 2 late goals.

With Spain, Argentina, England and France the only national teams with games still left to play in the competition, the golden boot race comes down to these players:

What happens if the final ends in a draw: extra time and penalties

The final of the international tournament can’t end in a draw. If the scores are level after 90 minutes and stoppage time, the match is settled by extra time or penalties. Extra time is 30 minutes, divided into 2 halves of 15 minutes each. If scores are still level after the full 120 minutes plus any stoppage time, the match goes to a penalty shootout.

In a penalty shootout, each team nominates 5 kickers to take a penalty against the opposing goalkeeper. Only players who are on the field at the end of extra time can participate. A coin toss decides which goal is used and which team shoots first. Then, teams take alternating kicks from the penalty spot. A best-of-5 format is used, but if scores are level after all 10 penalties, it goes to sudden death.
