What is the SHL (Swedish Hockey League)?
The Swedish Hockey League, better known as the SHL, is the highest level of the professional ice hockey system in Sweden. It consists of 14 teams which compete for the Le Mat Trophy over the course of the regular season and playoffs. In addition, the best teams from the SHL can compete in the IIHF’s Champions Hockey League, a European hockey tournament featuring the best teams from across the continent. For the 2022-23 season, the SHL was ranked as the strongest hockey league in Europe.
History of the SHL
Professional ice hockey in Sweden began with the Swedish Ice Hockey Championship in 1922, two years after the sport was introduced to the country by the American film director Raoul Le Mat, of whom the modern SHL trophy is named after. However, the Swedish Championships were held as a separate tournament for teams of all levels to enter until the 1952-53 season, where the Championship was reserved for the winner of the top level of Swedish hockey.
In 1975, the Swedish Elite League, known in Swedish as “Elitserien”, was founded. It originally consisted of 10 teams but later expanded to 12 for the 1987-88 season, and 14 for the 2015-16 season. In 2013, the name of the league was changed to Svenska Hockeyligan, or the Swedish Hockey League (SHL).
Format & Schedule of the SHL
The regular SHL season is played between late September to the beginning of March, with the playoffs taking place from March to April.
During the regular season, each team in the league plays a total of 52 games, earning 3 points for winning a game in regulation time, 2 points for winning in overtime or shootout, 1 point for losing in overtime or shootout and 0 for losing in regulation time. The top-ranked team at the end of the regular season games is crowned the league champions. However, the playoff winner is declared the Swedish ice hockey champion.
The six highest-ranked teams by points qualify directly for the playoffs, while the 4 teams ranked 7-10 play a best-of-3 series for the remaining 2 playoff spots. The 2 lowest-ranked teams in the league enter the relegation and promotion series Kvalserien to determine which teams play in the SHL and the lower tier next season.
